TMB / Croix du Bonhomme
Croix du Bonhomme is closed: adapting your 2027 TMB
If you are planning the 2027 TMB from an older guidebook, you may be counting on a night that no longer exists. The Croix du Bonhomme hut is closed. Here is what that changes for your route, and how to adapt without getting caught out.
What is confirmed
- The Croix du Bonhomme hut (FFCAM) has been closed to the public since 17 August 2026.
- During the works there is no lodging and no welcome on site.
- Reopening is announced for summer 2029.

What it changes for Les Contamines to Les Chapieux
This is the classic stage over the Col du Bonhomme and past the Croix du Bonhomme. You still walk the same cols: the route does not disappear. What changes is that you can no longer sleep at the Croix, and there is no welcome stop there either, so keep that in mind if you start late or the weather turns.
In practice, any usual split that put a night at the Croix has to be redone. Rather than just lengthening a stage, look at where you can lighten the day before or the day after.
Where to sleep instead
Four options to compare depending on your pace:
- Les Chapieux: the classic place to break the stage after the pass.
- Les Mottets: further on toward Italy. Cash or a French cheque only, no cards (source: lesmottets.com).
- Nant Borrant: an option on the Les Contamines side if you prefer a shorter first leg.
- La Balme: another option before the pass, for those who want an earlier start the next day.
We cannot promise prices or opening dates here: check each place and book first the ones with limited beds. You will find stage details on our TMB pages and in the planner.
Booking around this closure
With fewer beds in this sector, demand shifts to neighbouring lodgings. Do not leave these nights for last. Our guide How to book your TMB huts for 2027 covers the booking opening on 15 October 2026, scarce nights and cancellation terms.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Croix du Bonhomme hut open in 2027?
No. According to the FFCAM hut site, it has been closed to the public since 17 August 2026, with no lodging or welcome during the works, and reopening is announced for summer 2029.
Can I still walk over the Col du Bonhomme?
The classic Les Contamines to Les Chapieux stage still crosses the cols. What disappears is the option to sleep at the Croix. Check current conditions before you go.
Where can I sleep instead of Croix du Bonhomme?
Alternatives to look at are Les Chapieux, Les Mottets, Nant Borrant and La Balme, depending on how you re-split your stages. Check availability and terms with each.
Do I need to change the number of days?
Not necessarily. But without the night at the Croix, the stage split around Les Contamines and Les Chapieux changes: rebuild your plan and book first the nights that have become scarce.
